About Voluntary in E flat
Voluntary in E flat is a short, celebratory organ voluntary. It begins with a bell-like phrase which becomes the main theme of the piece, joined by flowing accompaniment and grounding bass. The joyous feel is augmented by an alternating time signature, which adds an element of excitement and uncertainty. In the central section of the piece a sudden change to the tonic minor adds some fleeting trepidation before returning to the celebratory bells once more.
Voluntary in E flat was written in 2025. It was premiered by Martyn Noble at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music in 2026. To listen to the recording head to their website.
