About Buried Treasure

Buried Treasure is a setting of the text of the same name by Richard Le Gallienne set for unaccompanied SATB choir. On the surface, it describes a journey through the seasons – with the world hiding away as winter approaches, worrying about where they will find joy now, then in April finding their buried treasure again. These thoughts could also be applied to life and the emergence of community spirit and solidarity during the coronavirus pandemic. Everyone shut themselves away, worried about when they might be able to enjoy the joys of life again – but like buried treasure, they had simply been hidden away, to be appreciated more as we emerge from these strange times. Similarly, in many places there was little or no community spirit, but the compassion and generosity shown through the pandemic will have made many communities and neighbourhoods stronger.

The piece begins quiet and quite mournful, but gains in strength and positivity as the work continues. Buried Treasure was composed in July 2020.
