I often find myself inspired by the words of others. Quite often I find that these inspirational phrases just pop up when looking for something entirely different – as if there to help mentally refocus and refresh you.

During my undergraduate days, I used to spend a lot of time in the library, researching something or other. This was particularly true during the second and third years, when I’d have a few hours between lectures, and was determined to try and make them productive! I loved researching and reading, and would often be looking for a text on an essay subject, only to be completely sidetracked by a completely unrelated, yet incredibly interesting musical books.

One such book I stumbled across was one of musical quotations. I’ve always kept an eye out for inspiring musical quotes, and I found a few more to add to my growing collection in there. I’ve recently stumbled across some of my records of musical quotes, whilst sifting through my old files in a computer changeover. I thought I’d post three of my favourites.

“To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable.”
– Aaron Copland

Music is the moonlight in the gloomy night of life.”
– Jean Paul Richter

“The real composer thinks about his work the whole time; he is not always conscious of this, but he is aware of it later when he suddenly knows what he will do.”
– Igor Stravinsky

I particularly love the third one as it makes me feel like a “real” composer – if there is such a thing!

Do you have any inspiring musical quotes that you are particularly fond of? I’d love to hear them. I have files full of them – these are from the first one I’ve ‘unpacked’ as it were – and I’m sure I’ll post some more as I come across them.
